4 Workplace Wellness Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Mind

When we talk about workplace wellness, it’s often surrounding all the different ways to keep your physical wellbeing in check. And while it’s critical to keep your physical body in check, workplace wellness encompasses your mental health as well. Your mentality and mental health is just as important as your physical state; after all, they work in conjunction with one another. When you feel unwell mentally, it can take a toll on your entire being. Work can often make us feel bogged down, tired, and burnt out, sometimes to the point where we feel like doing nothing at all. That’s why this month’s workplace wellness talk is dedicated to tips on how to destress and tend to all of your needs; a spring cleaning routine for your mind, if you will.

1. Acknowledge Your Successes (Big or Small)
One way to boost your mood is to recognize your achievements from each and every day. We go through life constantly striving for something and because of that, it can be hard to celebrate our small milestones. When you take the time to acknowledge the small steps that lead you to reaching your goals, you’re recognizing that you are, indeed, getting closer to whatever it is you’re working toward. If you have a big deadline at work, celebrate the fact that you’ve gotten half-way, or even that you’ve gotten started! While the end result is definitely a reason to celebrate, you should still acknowledge the steps in between.

2. Know When to Step Back
We think it’s important for everyone to know when it’s time to take a break from the task at hand. It is so common to get fixated on what we’re doing, to the point that we feel stuck and nothing we do feels good enough. Sometimes, the best thing to do in those moments of stress is to take a step back from whatever you’re doing and focus your attention elsewhere. Then, you can come back feeling refreshed and with a new perspective. When you’re working on something for hours at a time, your thoughts can turn to mush. When you take care to tend to your mind, you will help yourself rejuvenate.

3. Work Hard, Play Harder
When you’re working, you should work hard. Hard work most always pays off and leave us with a sense of accomplishment (and confidence)! But, by all means, make sure you’re taking time off for play. That doesn’t mean you’re off work, but still obsessively checking emails or otherwise in workmode. Time off means you’re really off; phone down, computer away, and emails left for your next workday. If you never get any “me-time,” then you’re never allowing the workday to wash off. Your mind needs time to rest, without any hanging worries or pressures that involve work.

4. Set Yourself Up for Success
One way to practice workplace wellness is to be proactive in setting the tone for your workweek. Don’t go to sleep every Sunday and wake up every Monday dreading what’s ahead. Sure, you might wish the weekend would never end, but that’s no reason to go to work with a bad attitude. It might sound silly, but giving yourself a little pep talk on the days you’re finding it hard to get to work can change your entire perspective. Don’t fuel bad moods; instead, turn your day around with a little self-encouragement.

Workplace wellness means taking care of your mindstate, both at work and at home. We all perform our best when we are able to destress, breathe easy, and enjoy our lives on a daily basis. Nothing will ever always be easy, but we can certainly rewire the way we think about each day in order to find moments of peace, even in the midst of a busy schedule.
