5 Workplace Wellness Tips to Avoid the Flu

With flu-season among us, practicing workplace wellness tips is essential to avoid cold or flu-like symptoms. And, as we all know, the best way to treat the flu is to do everything we can to prevent it in the first place. Nobody wants to spend days on end with a pounding headache, fever, or sore throat. If you’re wanting to keep healthy during the flu season, follow these five workplace wellness tips.

1. Keep Germs Away
Workplace wellness starts by keeping germs at bay. This means washing hands and using hand sanitizer after touching shared objects (like door handles). It also means wiping down surfaces such as phones, desks, and tables. Avoid close contact with others, especially if they’re sick. Don’t share drinks or eating utensils. Keep hands away from your nose, mouth, and eyes and always cover your mouth when you sneeze.

Basically, any of the things that we should always do to stop the spread of germs, we should especially do during the flu season. And, if you do fall ill, seek treatment, then go home. When you’re sick, don’t put others at risk by going to work, school, or out in public. Wait until you’re feeling better and no longer contagious.

2. Boost Your Immune System
Your immune system is what wards off illnesses and viruses. It is your body’s defense against the organisms that make you sick, so immune health is essential! There are plenty of things you can do to give your immune system an extra boost. Take vitamin C on a daily basis, catch some vitamin D from the sun, and live a healthy lifestyle overall. A healthy immune system means taking care of your body, from the foods you eat to the amount of sleep you get each night.

3. Be Up and Active
One of the best ways you can prevent the flu is to be active, as this is a key component to keeping your body healthy. Exercising for just thirty minutes a day, three times a week, can make a huge impact on your overall health. Physical activity increases circulation, which helps your body detect and fight against illness.

4. Eat Nutritious Foods
When you eat healthy, you ensure that your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs in order to maintain a healthy immune system. That’s why it’s important for you to eat a diet rich in things like vegetables, protein, and fruits, while avoiding processed, sugary foods. Workplace wellness doesn’t have to be hard; eating healthy keeps you healthy. It’s that simple!

5. Ask About the Flu Shot
While the flu shot doesn’t guarantee you won’t get the flu, it does a good job of preventing it. If you’re interested in the shot, ask your doctor about getting one. Getting the flu shot not only decreases your chance of getting sick, but others too. Even if you do get sick, having the shot can lessen the severity of the illness.

These tips can help reduce your risk of getting the flu by keeping germs at bay and building up your immune system to optimal health.
