How to Avoid the Bug

You are here

This flu season has been one of the most widespread the United States has seen in years. Everywhere you turn, a co-worker is coming down with the plague (uh, flu) and there’s a every-man-for-themselves attitude when it comes to avoiding the bug. It seems like the only way to dodge the flu is to stay at home in quarantine. While that may be the best option, it is also the most unrealistic one. So, what can you do to prevent yourself from getting sick? Our staff at PrimeCare wants to help guide you with some of our workplace wellness tips to staying healthy, all year round.

Exercise
Believe it or not, there are many benefits to staying active other than weight loss and the more obvious. Regular exercise increases circulation, blood flow, and boosts your immune system, things that are critical to your overall health. A healthy immune system makes you more likely to fight off viruses. A few days a week of high-intensity exercise can even help you to prevent the bug all together! Just remember to sanitize the equipment you use to wipe away any lingering germs.

Wash, Wash, Wash
Speaking of germ removal, another one of our workplace wellness tips is to keep your hands clean. Throughout the day, we are exposed to germs by touching door handles, carts at the grocery stores, sharing pens, and the list goes on. You should always wash your hands after using the restroom and before eating, but taking extra precautions during flu season is a good idea. Pocket-sized hand sanitizers are convenient to use when you’re out and about. Keep one in your car, your purse, a bag, wherever. Clean hands will help prevent the spread of germs.

Cover Your Mouth
Another way to prevent the spread of germs is to cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough. Whether you are sneezing because of allergies or a cold, always be sure to cover your mouth so others aren’t exposed to any of your germs. You should also protect your own hands from any snotty blows by aiming to sneeze (or cough) into the crevice of your arm. That way, you’re not transferring germs from mouth to hand. If you do use your hand, remember to sanitize afterward.

Get the Shot
Although the flu shot is not a guarantee that you won’t catch virus, it is still considered the best preventative measure one can take to decrease their chances of getting it. If you do get the flu shot and still catch the flu, it can help lessen the severity of the illness, letting you get back on your feet in no time.
