Tips For Staying Fit During The Winter | PrimeCARE

Feeling like your in a workout rut? With shorter days and cold temperatures it is easy to skip one to many days at the gym. Don’t get discouraged. Here are a few tips to help you stay active during the winter.

PrimeCARE is an extended hours clinic, conveniently located in the Little Rock metro area. We are here to make sure you stay well during the winter. Whether you decide to brave the cold, or keep your workout indoors at your house or local gym, we’re here to help you stay healthy and able to get moving during these winter months.

Get the right clothing.

Is the weather bad or do you just not have the appropriate gear for it? Exercising outdoors during the winter isn’t impossible. If you dress appropriately for the weather and pace yourself, it could be lots of fun.

Wear layers when you are working out in the cold. A base layer made of tight fitted, sweat-wicking fabric. A middle layer for insulation. Fleeces and puffer vests are great middle layers. Lastly, wear an outer layer. The outer layer serves to protect you from the elements.

Don’t bundle up too much. When you are layering up for an outdoor run or brisk walk, don’t forget that your core temperature rises when you get moving. A good rule is to dress like the temperature is 15 degrees higher than reported.

Set winter-appropriate goals.

Your winter workout routine should be different to accommodate for shorter days and colder temperatures. Shorter days means that morning and evening workouts won’t be as appealing. The cold temperature is an easy excuse to just head home and snuggle-up on the couch.

Try setting a workout goal that you can fit into your day intermittently. This might not be possible due to your work schedule and home responsibilities. The idea is to make a daily goal that is slow and steady. You’ll appreciate the excuses to get moving.

Get a workout buddy for accountability.

If you often find yourself making excuses to skip the workout, get a workout buddy for accountability. Your friends are likely facing the same winter workout rut you are.

Have Fun.

Since winter is such a common time of year that people find it difficult to make it to the gym, feel free to re-define what you consider to be a workout. Have fun! Your body already has to work extra to keep you warm, so you might as well focus your workout on having fun and not burning calories. Winter sports include snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating, and more.

Arkansas doesn’t see much snow in the winter. When we do it is often accompanied by icy roads, power outages, and more. Arkansans have much to deal with besides physical fitness. If you do find yourself trapped at home with little to do besides waiting for the roads to melt, get creative with an at-home workout.
