Walk-In Clinic or ER: Which Should You Visit?

We all find ourselves feeling unwell from time to time. Whether it’s an allergic reaction, a virus, or an injury, it is time to be examined by a medical professional. Since we don’t choose or plan to get sick, a standard doctor’s office isn’t always an option to go to. They might be closed or not have any openings available. Additionally, regular doctor’s offices aren’t always equipped to handle our situations, but that’s no reason to worry or put off seeking treatment.

Walk-in clinics have wider availability and have extended hours of operation, yet they often go forgotten because people think their only option is to go to the ER. Each of these two entities provide different services for different situations. Next time you find yourself suddenly ill, use these tips to decide whether you should visit a walk-in clinic or the emergency room (ER).

Know the Difference
In order to help you decide where to go for your medical needs, you should familiarize yourself with what services are offered at a walk-in clinic versus the ER.

Put in the simplest terms, an ER is going to be prepared to handle life-threatening and severe medical emergencies. They will see patients based on those with the highest needs. If you’re not on the verge of losing your life, you’re probably going to experience a longer waiting time. Emergency rooms should be your go-to only in the case of a true emergency or when you have no other option, while a walk-in clinic is good for less-severe ailments that need to be nipped in the bud.

Choose a Walk-In Clinic If…
Just like we mentioned, walk-in clinics exist whenever a visit to your doctor is necessary, but not readily available. Like their name suggests, these clinics are walk-in friendly, meaning you don’t have to make an appointment to be seen. They are open after regular business hours, so if you can’t afford to miss a day of work, you don’t have to. Choose a walk-in clinic when you feel yourself coming down with a cold or notice a funky rash and want to treat it promptly. Basically, we can treat anything your doctor’s office could.

Choose the ER If…
You should choose to go to the ER if you are experiencing anything along the lines of severe pain, broken bones, or are losing blood. They’re going to equipped and ready to handle emergency situations that can’t afford to be put off. We know ourselves best and can tell when something is wrong! Listen to your body, your symptoms, and go to the ER if you think it’s necessary.

What to Do If You’re Unsure
If you are unsure whether or not your condition constitutes as a medical emergency, go to the ER. They will help you identify your needs, and if you’re not in a life-threatening situation, they will let you know. In order to avoid potentially long waiting times, you can make the decision to come to a walk-in clinic, like one of our two PrimeCare locations in Conway.
