What Should I Do if I Don’t Have a PCP?

Finding yourself a primary care physician (PCP) is just one of those responsibilities you have as an adult. It’s another box you can checkmark off the list, albeit an important one. A PCP is your best friend when it comes to knowing each and every detail pertaining to your medical history. Overtime, they get to know your health needs better than anyone else because they are the ones who consistently see you and treat you.

But for a number of reasons, it’s not always easy to find a PCP. Maybe you’ve moved to a new town or can’t find one currently accepting patients. Even more likely, you’re a busy person and you simply haven’t had the time it takes to research, call, and visit one. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you can’t receive healthcare services meanwhile. If you don’t have a designated primary care provider, here’s what to do.

Know You Have Resources
If you’re sick, have a minor injury, or any non life-threatening ailments, you can get the help you need from after-hour clinics such as PrimeCare in Conway. There’s no hassle in scheduling an appointment and you’ll be able to be seen the same day. The struggle in finding a PCP often comes from having to wait for an appointment or available opening, so in the meantime, take advantage of your other resources.

Additionally, pharmacies often provide vaccinations at low-costs, such as the flu shot and other routine vaccinations. Pharmacists are also available to answer general questions about medications and may be able to provide guidance on what to take for something simple like the common cold.

Track Your Medical History
One way you can make the most out of your healthcare visits is to track your medical history. The benefit of seeing the same doctor regularly is that they get to know you more and more with each visit. Until then, you can ensure you’re receiving the best care possible by being able to provide your doctor with a detailed account of your medical background. The more comprehensive the better, but tracking it doesn’t have to be complex. Keep a journal where you document appointments, your symptoms, and overall health history.

Don’t Stop Searching
Even though you can receive healthcare without a PCP, it’s important not to stop searching for one just because you’ve been seen and treated at an after-care clinic. If you call around to find a PCP and can’t be seen for another few weeks, schedule and keep the appointment anyway. This will give you an opportunity to establish a relationship with a doctor as a patient they can expect to see again and again. You’ll then become an existing patient of the clinic and can familiarize yourself with them. Next time you need to make an appointment, you won’t have to go through it as a new patient and will likely be seen much sooner.

Until then, don’t think you have to put your health on the backburner. Not having a PCP doesn’t mean you’re on your own and have to self-diagnose your health issues. PrimeCare in Conway is the perfect place to go when you’re still searching for a regular healthcare provider.
